Reflex Chess

Chess leaderboard

The top hundred on each ladder, best first. Ratings are Glicko-2 and move on every result. A place here has to be earned twice: by rating, and by playing enough for the rating to be believed.

How the two ratings work

There are two boards because there are two ratings, and they measure different things. A duel rating comes from fifteen puzzles raced against an opponent at your level: it measures pattern recognition under time pressure. A game rating comes from full games at a real time control: it measures whether you can hold a position together for forty moves. A fast solver is not automatically a good blitz player, and one combined number would make each ladder noisy with the other's results.

Both use Glicko-2, which carries a second number alongside the rating: how confident the system is in it. That is why a new account does not appear here immediately. A rating that has only seen three results is a guess, and a board topped by guesses is not a board. Once yours has settled, you are on it.

What moves a rating

Only rated results. Lessons, practice sets and Reflex Rush move your XP and your streak and never touch either rating — they are practice, and practice you can repeat is not evidence. Beating an opponent rated far above you moves your rating a long way; beating one far below you barely moves it at all, which is the property that makes a ladder worth climbing rather than farming.
