Smothered mate, and the queen sacrifice that builds it
The prettiest forced mate in chess, and one of the few worth memorising as a sequence rather than a shape, because the sequence is always the same.

What smothered mate is
Smothered mate is checkmate by a knight against a king that cannot move because every square around it is occupied by its own pieces. The knight is the only piece that can deliver it, because it is the only piece that does not care about the wall.
The full pattern, usually called Philidor's Legacy, is a forced sequence rather than a single move: knight check to the corner, king to the corner, knight check back to the edge, king returns, queen check on the back rank, rook forced to capture the queen -- and now the king is boxed in by its own rook, and the knight mates.
How to spot it
- Look for an enemy king in the corner with its own rook on the adjacent file and pawns in front of it. That is the finished shape.
- Then look for a knight that can reach f7, h7, f2 or h2 with check.
- Count what is on g8 and g7 -- or their mirrors. If the king's only flight square is occupied by its own piece, the shape is already half built.
- The queen sacrifice is what fills the last square. Ask whether a check on the back rank forces a capture that blocks the king in.

Avoiding it as the defender
The warning sign is a king in the corner with an unmoved rook beside it and an enemy knight within two moves of f7 or h7. If that is your position and there is a queen on the board, check the sequence before you make a quiet move.
The practical prophylactic is usually to move the king off the corner, or to give it a genuine flight square on the second rank rather than one occupied by a piece. Defending the mating square does not help: the knight arrives with check, and check is not negotiable.
